Happy 6th Birthday, Lily!

Dear Lily,

I keep telling you that you are not allowed to turn 6! It just seems too, too old. The truth is--I told you that when you turned 5, and I will continue to tell you that every year from here on out. You are my baby, and you are growing up so fast!
Check Spelling

You are tall and lean, and so incredibly stunning! You wear big kid clothes, watch big kid t.v., laugh at silly, big kid kinds of things. You have homework every night, you can spell your first and last name, and can reason through lots of situations. You are intuitive, thoughtful, and smart in a sometimes-too-bossy-kinda-way! You hear everything, always picking up on any kind of stress, worry or "adult only" kind of tone. And, unfortunately, you have a set of nerves that makes you worry incessantly. You are getting braver everyday, though!

You love Kindergarten...you took swimming lessons this summer...you are continuing to dance your way through ballet...and you played your first team sport ever...soccer!

Aside from the words quirky, creative and fanciful...I cannot think of a perfect word to describe your personality...? You work best in a state of controlled clutter. You love stuff...lots and lots of little stuff all around you. If given a choice of something to do, you always, always pick art. You love scissors and tape, and glitter and glue, and all of the mess that comes with it. You make finger puppets and catalog collages and paper flowers and cards without a single direction or master copy. When I get really impressed with something you came up with, and ask "Wow. How did you think to do that?", you always reply with a very simple, "My brain told me to."

You change clothes more often than the direction of the wind changes. If your clothes don't feel exactly just right, they are off. Pajamas are your favorite, and I often say you need 14 pairs just so I can keep up with you. You get crabby at the drop of a hat, too, my fickle, particular girl!

You play hard...really hard. Your imagination is ALWAYS on, and lucky for you, your brother is always on board for whatever pretend-game you want him to play. Your favorite thing to do is play by yourself, though. Still to this day, you entertain yourself so well. You are happiest playing in the garden, digging in the dirt or frolicking in the leaves. Roller-skating is your current favorite mode of transportation. You are the kind of kid who needs quiet time every day without anyone bothering you. Sometimes, you are just so teenage-esque.

You are my special, beautiful girl! My favorite thing about you is when you laugh without abandon. You have this hearty, from the belly...yet still girly laugh. Your smile lights up a room! May you be happy and smiley-and-bright (and smart, and kind, and confident, too...) every day.

Love you, Amazing Girl of mine,

Mama
