Happy Birthday, Lily (...10 days late)! I cannot believe that tomorrow brings November already, and I really, truly cannot believe that you are FIVE! It doesn't seem possible.
Dear Lily,
Your dad and I always knew we wanted to be parents. We knew we would have a daughter named Lily one day. What we didn't know was how completely you would change our lives. You define us--you made us a family. For that, you will always be special.
You are a typical first-born/oldest child. You are cautious and prudent. You are very maternal, especially over your brother and Maggie & Colin. You are just the right amount of "bossy" when it comes to playing with other kids you already know, and we are teaching you to quit being so shy and speak up for yourself already! You started talking early, and have been very verbal ever since. Your language is pretty spot-on. You are even using adverbs correctly. You love words and letters, thanks to pre-school (and your teacher-minded mother, I suppose). You continually ask what letter something starts with and how does that letter look. Currently, the lower-case e is a "circle with a line", in your words. Sleeping is our biggest fight with you. You spend so much darned time arguing that you are not tired, that it wears us completely out. And, we usually end up feeling bad, because you truly do have a hard time falling asleep, even when you are tired. I have two theories: either you are nocturnal by nature, having been born at 10:26 PM, or you are going to make up for all of your lost sleep in your teenage years. I'll report back then.
Particular describes you to a T. You know what you want, and fighting with you isn't really worth it. If you don't want to eat chicken, that's fine. If you want to wear stripes and polka dots in multiple colors, go for it. If you want to wear a dress over pants and a shirt, who cares. If you want a bow in the middle of your bangs, so be it. My prayer is that you always keep that confidence and "I look beautiful" attitude, because you are. Everything about your graceful figure and stunning brown hair and blue eyes combo screams beautiful. May you always remember that! Your imagination is one of your greatest assets. It goes for miles and miles. Just the other day, you told me that the window was crying while looking out of the back seat on a rainy afternoon. And, you remember everything. I'm expecting many A's on future report cards, and very creative school projects.
Never in our lives, have five years gone by so incredibly fast! Never in our lives have we been on such a roller coaster. We rise and fall with your many triumphs and mood-altering modes (a.k.a. whining). While this "parenting-work" is exhausting, stressful and worrisome at times, it is also the very best thing we have ever done...all because of YOU! Thanks for bringing joy to every single one of our days, and for making us so very proud!
Love you,
Mom and Daddy
